What is post-operative rehabilitation?

Post-operative rehabilitation is a crucial phase in the recovery journey of individuals who have undergone surgical procedures.

Whether it's a joint replacement, spinal surgery, or any other surgical intervention, the primary goal of rehabilitation is to help patients regain their physical function, reduce pain, and improve their overall quality of life.

At CHD Living, we understand the significance of post-operative rehabilitation in your recovery journey. Our mission is to optimise your path to wellness, and we do this through two essential components; physiotherapy and hydrotherapy, which play pivotal roles in promoting recovery and restoring mobility.

Your Care

  • Recovering from a surgical operation can be a challenging and sometimes daunting experience.

It often requires a period of rest, healing, and rehabilitation to regain one's strength and independence.

In such situations, residential care and support play a crucial role in facilitating a smooth and successful recovery process.

    Understanding Residential Care:

Residential care refers to the provision of temporary accommodation and personalised assistance for individuals who are recovering from surgery or dealing with health issues that make it difficult for them to live independently at home.

The primary goal of residential care following an operation is to ensure your safety, comfort, and well-being during the recovery phase.

Skilled Nursing Care: Residential care facilities often have skilled nurses on staff who can provide medical support, post-operative wound care, administer medications, and monitor vital signs. They can assess any post-operative complications and adjust the care plan accordingly.

  • What are the benefits of Residential Care Following an Operation:

Specialised Care: Our CHD Living residential care facilities are equipped to handle the unique needs of post-operative patients, ensuring that they receive the appropriate care and attention.

Faster Recovery: With access to skilled medical professionals and rehabilitation services, our residents often experience a quicker and more successful recovery.

Peace of Mind: Both you and your families can have peace of mind knowing that you are in a safe and supportive environment.

Reduced Stress: The supportive atmosphere of residential care and the practical support with daily living tasks can reduce the stress and anxiety associated with post-operative recovery, allowing you to focus on healing.

  • If you need constant supervision or assistance, our residential care ensures around-the-clock care and support. This is particularly important during the initial stages of recovery when complications can arise.

  • Personalised Care Plans: You will receive a personalised care plan tailored to your specific needs according to the type of surgery you underwent.

This plan includes dietary considerations, medication schedules, and any required mobility aids.

You are encouraged to participate in the building of your care plan as much or as little as you would like. We can support you to set and acheive goals that are most important to you in your recovery journey.

  • Families are encouraged to be involved in your recovery process. They can visit, participate in care planning, and provide emotional support.

Therapy

  • Many operations require physical therapy or rehabilitation to regain strength and mobility.

Our CHD Living centres offer these services on-site, with experienced therapists guiding patients through exercises and techniques to aid recovery.

  • 1. Assessment and Individualised Treatment:

Our physiotherapy programmes begin with a comprehensive assessment by a licensed physiotherapist. The therapist will evaluate your range of motion, strength, flexibility, and pain levels to create a personalised rehabilitation plan.

The treatment plan is tailored to the specific surgical procedure, the patient's age, overall health, and rehabilitation goals.

    2. Pain Management:

Pain management is a primary focus during post-operative physiotherapy.

Our therapists use various techniques such as manual therapy, modalities like heat and cold therapy, and soft tissue mobilisation to alleviate pain and discomfort.

Non-invasive pain relief methods are preferred to minimize the use of medication.

    3. Restoring Mobility and Function:

Our physiotherapists will guide you through a series of exercises designed to regain joint mobility, muscle strength, and functional independence.

Gradually increasing the intensity of exercises helps prevent muscle atrophy and joint stiffness.

    4. Gait Training:

For patients who underwent lower extremity surgeries, gait training is essential. Physiotherapists teach proper walking techniques and use assistive devices if needed.

    5. Education and Home Exercise Programs:

You will be educated on proper body mechanics, posture, and techniques to perform daily activities without straining the surgical site.

Home exercise programs are prescribed to ensure that patients continue their rehabilitation efforts after your residential stay.

  • 1. Buoyancy Assistance:

Hydrotherapy involves exercises performed in a warm water pool, which reduces the effects of gravity and provides buoyancy.

This allows you to move with less pain and strain on their joints.

    2. Pain Reduction and Muscle Relaxation:

The warm water in hydrotherapy pools promotes relaxation of muscles and increases blood flow to the surgical area, which can aid in reducing pain and stiffness.

Water resistance provides a gentle resistance for muscle strengthening without excessive impact on the body.

    3. Improved Range of Motion:

The natural resistance of water facilitates joint mobilisation, helping you to regain your range of motion more quickly.

    4. Balance and Coordination:

Hydrotherapy exercises enhance balance and coordination, which are crucial for preventing falls and re-establishing functional movements.

    5. Stress Reduction:

The calming environment of a hydrotherapy pool can help alleviate stress and anxiety, contributing to overall well-being during the recovery process.

  • Occupational therapy (OT) is a specialised service provided to our residents.

Our trained Occupational therapists work with you to promote your independence and improve your ability to engage in meaningful daily activities, also known as "occupations." The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enhance your quality of life and functional independence.

Occupational therapy plays a crucial role in your rehabilitation journey by helping you maintain or regain your independence, improve your quality of life, and adapt to physical and cognitive challenges. It is a holistic approach that considers the unique needs and goals of each individual.

We will assess your physical, cognitive, emotional, and social abilities, as well as your specific needs and goals in order to identify areas where you may be struggling to perform everyday tasks.

These goals may include improving mobility, self-care skills, cognitive function, or adapting your living environment for better accessibility.

These interventions may include exercises, adaptive techniques, assistive devices, and environmental modifications to help you regain functional abilities and adjust to any physical limitations.

We may recommend and provide training for the use of adaptive equipment or assistive devices, such as wheelchairs, walkers, grab bars, or specialised utensils, to help you perform daily activities more independently.

If you are living with cognitive challenges, such as dementia or Alzheimer's disease, we can implement cognitive rehabilitation strategies to improve memory, problem-solving, and decision-making skills often focus on helping with your activities of daily life (ADL’s), which include bathing, dressing, grooming, eating, and toileting aiming to improve your ability to perform these activities safely and with greater independence.

We will also address your emotional well-being, using therapeutic techniques to reduce anxiety, depression, and stress and improve overall mental health.

  • We provide a range of mobility aids to support your rehabilitation journey. These aids provide assistance, safety, and independence, allowing you to participate in daily activities and maintain a higher level of mobility and autonomy.

The choice of the right mobility aid or hoist depends on your specific needs and preferences, as well as the recommendations of our healthcare and therapy team.

Our specially designed pool hoists are available to support transferring you into and out of our hydrotherapy pools allowing you to enjoy the benefits of aquatic therapy or recreational swimming with safety in mind.

Many of our bedrooms and all of our gyms have ceiling-mounted hoists to provide a smooth and efficient way to transfer you throughout the room, saving space and reduce the risk of injury.

Nutrition & Wellbeing

  • Proper nutrition is vital for the healing process. Our residential care facilities provide balanced meals designed to meet the dietary requirements of post-operative patients. Special diets can be accommodated if necessary.

  • Recovering from an operation can be emotionally taxing. Our skilled teams offer emotional support, companionship, and encouragement to boost your morale during your recovery journey.

  • To prevent feelings of isolation and promote mental well-being, our CHD Living residential care facilities organise social activities and events that encourage our residents to interact and engage in hobbies or interests.

  • If you require transportation to and from medical appointments, or from hospital and home we can arrange for such services to ensure continuity of care.

  • The environment in our CHD Living care facilities is designed to be safe and accessible, reducing the risk of accidents and promoting a stress-free recovery experience.
